How to make Horseradish Cream Sauce

Where most horseradish cream sauce recipes are pretty basic (horseradish + cream), we take things to a whole new level with built-in rich umami flavor that makes it so much more worth the effort.

  1. Grab a small heatproof pan and pour in the heavy cream. Position the pan over the grate, ensuring it stays away from direct heat. Let it sit there for about 45 minutes to an hour. You want the cream to get nice and thick with a gentle smoked flavor. Give it a stir every now and then to keep things smooth.

2. Now, let’s move on to the cast-iron skillet. Melt the butter in it over the fire, making sure it’s nice and sizzling. Once it’s all melted and glorious, add in the minced shallots. Allow them to cook until they reach that irresistible crispy and golden perfection. This usually takes around 3 to 5 minutes.

3. In a separate small bowl, let’s bring the party together. Whisk together the mayo, mustard, sour cream, shallots, and horseradish. Give it a good mix until everything is nicely combined. Now, let’s add that delicious smoked cream. Pour it in a little at a time while whisking until the mixture becomes smooth and drips from the spoon but still maintains a thick consistency.

4. Time to add some flavor! Season the mixture with a sprinkle of freshly ground black pepper and salt to taste. This will give it that extra kick of deliciousness.

5. To add an extra touch of freshness and flavor, throw in some vibrant and aromatic fresh rosemary.

Creamy Horseradish Recipe Tips

  • Swap spicy mustard for Dijon mustard to lower the intensity or cut back on the horseradish.
  • For a bold horseradish flavor, consider using freshly grated horseradish root instead of prepared horseradish. Fresh horseradish root packs a more potent punch, adding a vibrant and authentic taste to your sauce. Grate the root just before incorporating it into the sauce for the best results.

What to serve with Creamy Horseradish Sauce

Not only is this the best horseradish sauce for prime rib, it’s a perfect condiment for so many things. Drizzle this horseradish cream sauce over a slice of smoked beef tenderloin or grilled filet mignon. Or, use this creamy sauce on top of these easy smoked baked potatoes!  And it’s the perfect addition to any sandwich – especially if you want to take your pit beef to new heights.

How to store Horseradish Cream Sauce

  • To keep your leftover horseradish sauce fresh and ready for future use, store leftover sauce in an airtight container. It’ll stay fresh for 1-2 weeks.
  • Slather leftover sauce on burgers or drizzle on top of steak salad or roast beef sandwiches for an extra kick of flavor.
