Sloppy Joes with Onion Straws

  • 2 tbs canola oil
  • ½ red bell pepper diced
  • ½ green bell pepper diced
  • ½ red onion diced
  • 1 lbs ground beef
  • 1 lbs ground pork
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 teas cayenne pepper
  • 1 tbs paprika
  • 1 teas ground cumin
  • 1 teas dry mustard
  • 1 12 oz jar chili sauce
  • 3 tbs packed brown sugar
  • 2 tbs Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tbs jarred jalapenos diced
  • Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper
  • Rolls

For the Onion Straws

  • 2 cups canola oil
  • 1 Large Egg
  • ½ cup milk
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 pinch salt and pepper
  • 1 sweet vidalia


Recipe for Sloppy Joes

  • Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium high heat. Add the onions and peppers and saute for 4 minutes, or until tender. Add the pork and beef. Cook until browned. Stir in the garlic, cayenne, paprika, cumin, dry mustard and cool for 1 minute longer.
  • Stir in the chili sauce, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, and jalapenos. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat to a low simmer and cook for 20 minutes, until sauce has thickened. Season with salt and pepper as needed.

Recipe for Onion Straws

  • Heat the canola oil in a large pot with deep sides. Whisk the egg and milk together in a bowl. In a shallow bowl, whisk together the flour, cayenne, paprika, and garlic powder. Sprinkle a little salt and pepper in there and whisk again. Soak the onion slices in the egg milk mixture for 10 minutes. 
  • A few at a time, drain the egg mixture from the onions and toss in the flour mixture. Fry, a few pieces at a time, until golden brown. Using a heatproof slotted spoon, remove and drain on a paper towel lined plate. Repeat until all onion slices are fried.
