Who loves a grilled hot dog? We all do! And these loaded dogs are slathered in a smoked guacamole, bacon, bean mix and drizzled with barbecue sauce. The way a messy dog should be.

This post was sponsored by Western Wood Products. Thoughts and opinions are my own. Now, level up your hot dog.

Nothing is better on a hot day than a char-grilled hot dog. Loaded with toppings or absolutely naked in a bun, an all beef frank with that kiss of smoke is about as classic as you can get.

I am a sucker for grilled hot dogs. Plain and simple. But when I dress them up – it’s go big or go home. And you’d be amazed how simple it is to infuse smoked flavor with wood chips to toppings, like guacamole, to really kick things up.

Do you top your hot dogs?

I am one of those people who can put absolutely nothing on a quality hot dog and love it. And then there are days when I want everything piled high on top.

For these, I decided to char-grill hot dogs and add Western hickory wood chips to the grill to create a smoked flavor in the grilled avocados and hot dogs. Since everything was grilling quick, I just tossed the chips over the coals and shut the lid to infuse a hint of that smokey flavor.

How long to grill hot dogs

Like all things the time is going to depend on how hot you are running your grill and other factors like the temperature outside. However, hot dogs are generally pre-cooked and grill up fast.

I rotate the franks, making sure the are getting heated evenly for 5 to 7 minutes and will usually pause in a few spots to get those nice grill marks.

If you are really looking for perfection, make sure the grilled hot dogs temp at 155 degrees F.

On hot summer days tho, I love the memory of childhood hot dogs that are a little too past done from dads grill and will sometimes sit them on the top rack and allow myself to forget about them for 20 or so minutes before enjoying one.

How to grill avocados

Grill avocados softens them and adds a beautiful flavor to the soft fruit. A few minutes over hot coals goes a long way.

  • Make sure you oil all sides of the avocado to prevent sticking as you grill.
  • Avocados don’t take long to char, so be sure to stand by and rotate the avocado as needed.
  • Once grilled, allow the avocados to cool before scooping out the filling – these babies get HOT and the skins hold onto the heat.

These grilled dogs slathered in bbq sauce and char-grilled avocado that I mash into guacamole and serve with bacon and bean relish are taking hot dogs to a whole new level.
